Status and trends of Mercury pollution of the atmosphere and terrestrial ecosystems in Poland

Apr 06 2021 Read 25 Times The goal of this paper is to assess the current status and trends of total mercury (THg) contamination of the atmosphere and terrestrial ecosystems in Poland. The study shows that the reduced domestic and worldwide atmospheric emission of Hg resulted in decreased THg level in the terrestrial biotope and biosphere. Considering that Poland is one of the main Hg emitters in Europe, the THg concentrations in its abiotic environment are still elevated. However, the THg level in terrestrial organisms is relatively low, which is because a large proportion of Hg deposited on land is accumulated in organic-rich soils. Regarding the THg concentration, consumption of wildlife and livestock from Poland is safe for humans. Nevertheless, the authors indicate the need for effective environmental monitoring, based on selected bioindicators, which is crucial considering the slowing reduction of Hg emission combined with the consequences of the changing climate.

Factors affecting the choice of sensor

Apr 05 2021 Read 8 Times Author: Arthur Burnley on behalf of Alphasense Ltd Free to read Unlock In recent years, the increased utilisation of low-cost sensors has significantly affected the safety and environmental markets, but instead of replacing reference-grade analysers, low-cost sensors have dramatically expanded the scope and range of applications for gas and particle monitoring equipment; particularly for environmental applications. As a consequence, the number of sensor manufacturers has increased considerably, so in the following article, Arthur Burnley from Alphasense will outline some of the factors that should be considered when choosing a sensor manufacturer.   Reputation and longevity A sensor supplier is more than just a cog in a supply chain – it is a business partner, with responsibility for possibly the most important performance characteristics of a product. In many respects, the brand reputation of an instrument manufacturer rests

The water is rich in phosphorus and nitrogen which are nutrients. Scientists say suddenly adding a large amount of nutrients to natural water will result in algae and bacteria growth. Algae can suffocate fish and as a result, there may be fish kills or red tides associated with this.
